Faubourg Marigny

The beauty of the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood lies in its proximity to the French Quarter but without the Quarter's bustling tourist activity. Although reminiscent of a small Creole suburb, "the Marigny" has emerged as one of the city's vital centers of activity. Neighborhood bars, restaurants and jazz clubs are located throughout the area... and over the past decade, some of the best bars and nightspots in New Orleans are along Frenchmen Street, the Marigny's main drag.

History

After 1805, New Orleans residents felt a need to expand the boundaries of the city and many settled in the Faubourg Marigny, considered the first suburb of New Orleans.

In 1800, Bernard de Marigny inherited plantation property from his father, Pierre Phillipe de Marigny de Mandeville. In 1808, at the age of 20, he petitioned the city to subdivide the property closest to the city into lots.

The Faubourg Marigny is now a maze of angular streets forming triangles and squares -- numbers jump sequence mid-block and so do street names.  Many of the Creole cottages and buildings dating back to the development of this suburb give the area its character.

Entertainment

“…popular with French Quarter expatriates looking to escape the crowds…the hip district is the nightlife center of town for locals, and Frenchmen Street swings with live music clubs, casual restaurants and other hangouts.” – Where Magazine

What gives this area its charm and character is the diverse blend of restaurants, nightlife, shops, architecture, visitors and inhabitants. It’s also a popular hangout for celebrities, including Bruce Willis who enjoys the atmosphere on Frenchmen Street and Nicolas Cage who just purchased a home on Esplanade Avenue near his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola.
